Australia has become one of the wealthiest countries in the world and ranks among the highest in the world in terms of health care, life expectancy, quality of life, human development, public education, economic freedom and the protection of life and liberty. Australia’s immigration figures are skyrocketing as it has become one of the most popular destinations for expatriates to settle and pursue their careers. It seems that living in Australia has become quite an attractive prospect for many people around the world and for a very good reason.  There’s just something about living in Australia that you wouldn’t experience anywhere else.

The most urbanized as well as the most modern cities in the world are located in Australia. Often, these are the places most conducive to living in Australia.

While choosing a place to live in Australia, let us understand Australia a little better. Australia has six states which are South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. Australia also has two mainland territories which are the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. Property rates differ from area to area. Quite obviously, property in the big cities and by the ocean is more expensive than other areas and suburbs.

Deciding which state to live in Australia

Rather than look state-by-state it is worth looking at in the major cities in Australia and seeing exactly what they have to offer:

Sydney

Situated in New South Wales, Sydney is the capital of the state. Sydney has a population of over 4.4 million and offers very attractive employment prospects for skilled overseas workers and an economy which continues to prosper even against the backdrop of the difficult worldwide economic environment. If you are looking for a multicultural city then Sydney is one you should consider.

Melbourne

Melbourne itself is the capital of the state of Victoria with a population of around 4 million and a history which goes back to 1835. Melbourne has a very buoyant and growing economy boasting the busiest seaports in Australia and a massive automotive industry including the likes of Ford and Toyota. However, there is so much more to Melbourne with a very influential financial sector which is particularly strong in the pensions industry.

Brisbane

Brisbane is Australia's third largest city with a population of around 2 million and is the capital of Queensland. While many of the larger cities in Australia tend to focus upon various specific employment sectors, Brisbane offers a mix which many others cannot offer, something that is attracting more and more skilled overseas workers. Large amounts of money have been invested into education, research and the local economy as a whole.

Perth

While Perth may only offer a population of around 1.6 million it has shown significant economic growth over the last few years, which has regularly exceeded the Australian average growth. The city has a very prominent port which feeds the import and export industries in and around the region, offering employment opportunities in many different areas. The city’s burgeoning economy based on its port and mining businesses is making the city one of the most exciting cities in the country.

Adelaide

Adelaide is the fifth-largest city in Australia with a population of just over 1 million and one which is proving very popular amongst expats. In many ways Adelaide has everything from the weather to the economy, from the lifestyle to the reasonable cost of living, something which has not gone unnoticed by many people. Skilled workers in the field of manufacturing, defence technology, research and the services industry are often in short supply, opening various avenues for overseas skilled workers.

So as an immigrant to the country and when given a choice on what place you would choose to start living in Australia, it is best you do your research to get all the facts before making a decision.

Living in Australia
and getting used to life here is much like moving to any other country. There are several things that you need to do to get settled. But if English is already your primary language, then it’s easier for you to get around.

Living in Australia as a migrant opens new opportunities. But as soon as you arrive in Australia, here are the most important things that you have to do.

  1. Get a Tax File Number. In order for you to earn and receive income in the country, you will need to obtain a Tax File Number. For this, you can telephone the Australian Taxation Office to get a TFN application form sent to you.
  2. Register with Medicare. Medicare allows you to avail of basic medical services subsidized by the Australian government.
  3. Open your bank account. You will need a bank account in the country because government benefits and wages are usually paid directly to personal accounts.
  4. Register with Centrelink. This is a government agency that provides a variety of services to the community. You will find helpful information about settling in the country by simply contacting this office.

It isn’t so difficult to get used to living in Australia so long as you’re armed with the right kind of information.

5 things you should know as a migrant before you live in Australia:

1) Healthcare. Australia's universal healthcare system is provided by the Government's 'Medicare' Australia. Medicare provides treatment by doctors, medical practitioners and public hospital use. Three groups of migrants living in Australia have access to Medicare:

* Permanent residents
* Those with permanent residency claims being processed
* Citizens with countries providing mutual care agreements with Australia. These include: Great Britain, Finland, Holland, New Zealand and Ireland. Italy and Malta receive 6 months care only. Other migrants are required to pay for treatment.

2) Schools. As a migrant living in Australia, finding the right school for your kids is your top priority. The UN's Human Development Index has ranked the education system in Australia as one of the best in the world. The school year is January - December, so check out myschool.edu.au for more information.

3) Homes. Use the online forums to research the area you wish to live in Australia before buying a home. If you are a migrant living in Australia on a temporary visa, you must get permission from the Foreign Investment Review Board before you buy a house.

4) Pets. Living in Australia doesn't mean you have to part with your pet. Simply meet the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service conditions, and work around a 30 day stay in quarantine in Sydney, Melbourne or Perth. All cats and dogs have to be micro-chipped.

5) Worldly goods. Migrants living in Australia on a temporary visa might find it cheaper to buy new or previously owned furniture 'over there' instead of paying to transport theirs around the world.
