Australia immigration procedure involves a lot of steps. On a general note, you have to determine the type of visa you need, have in hand positive skill assessment, desired IELTS result, lodge your EOI application, wait for it to get short listed, once shortlisted, apply for visa & submit necessary documents and wait for your visa to either get approved or rejected. The procedure is not as straight forward as it sounds. Not every visa applicant will get a visa and the process of selecting candidates to provide visa is not transparent.
Gathering the Necessary Information
Once you decide that you want to relocate to Australia, you should gather necessary information regarding Australia immigration procedure. You should identify the type of visa suitable for you. Temporary visas are easier to get, but they have lot of limitations on work rights. Permanent visas on the other hand allow you to stay in Australia for a longer period and apply for Australian citizenship after 4 years if all conditions are met. Provisional visa allows you to apply for Australia PR after fulfilling certain conditions attached with your provisional visa.
Get Positive Skill Assessment
To be eligible for permanent skilled migrant visa, you must have positive skill assessment in hand for your nominated profession. Australia has got various skill assessment authorities for various professions. For example, for engineers, skill assessment authority is Engineers Australia. Each skill assessment authority has its own policy and procedures. Once you have received positive skill assessment for your nominated profession, than only, you can lodge your EOI application. You have to remember that positive assessment tests too can’t guarantee that your visa will be approved.
Get good result in IELTS Test
To lodge your EOI application, you must have minimum 6 each in IELTS Test. Skill assessment authorities may have different criteria to approve your skill assessment application. So please confirm the requirement of IELTS score with skill assessment authority associated with your profession. For example, Engineers Australia asks for minimum 6 each in IELTS, on the other hand, ANMC asks for 7 each in IELTS (Academic). So if you are a Nurse, you need 7 each in IELTS test to get positive skill assessment though 6 each is required for lodging EOI application. But without having positive skill assessment, you cannot lodge EOI application. In general, I would recommend my clients to go for minimum 7 each in IELTS because you get 10 additional points. Always try to get as many points as possible. The more points you have in EOI, the better chance of short listing you have in EOI.
Lodge EOI Application
Once you have positive skill assessment in hand and fulfilling all other requirements for lodging EOI application, you lodge your EOI application. Every fortnight, DIAC shortlist applications from EOI pool and invite applicants to lodge visa application within 60 days.
Visa Application and Fees
Once your application is shortlisted in EOI, you will get an invitation from DIAC to lodge your visa application within 60 days. Fees for visa should be paid along with the application.
